Bloom Where You Are: The Journey

Sometimes, the creative journey takes unexpected turns. The story of Bloom Where You Are began when I was working with Sheila and Terri from our local Quilts Across America team in Lexington, KY, to modify the classic "Around the World" pattern to fit a twin-size bed. That challenge sparked an idea: what if I explored other designs using only half-square triangles?

From that exploration came Bloom Where You Are, a design that celebrates growth, creativity, and embracing where you are in life. Rediscovered Inspiration

For years, I dreamed of opening a quilt retreat center—a haven where creativity and connection could flourish. Despite my best efforts, every attempt seemed to hit a brick wall. It was a frustrating time, leaving me questioning my next steps.

In moments of reflection, I was reminded of an idea that had quietly taken root before I became a Studio 180 Design Certified Instructor: pairing quilting with Bible studies. Though the idea had been tucked away for years, a conversation with my friend Cindy, co-president of the local Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP) chapter, reignited that dream. Cindy and I launched our Quilts Across America team, donating handmade quilts to support SHP’s mission of providing beds for children in need. Through these heartfelt discussions, the dream of combining quilting and faith resurfaced with renewed purpose and excitement.

The timing felt serendipitous. An invitation to participate in the Island Zest Blog Hop arrived just as the vision for Bloom Where You Are began to take shape. The vibrant Island Zest fabric collection by Kathy Engle for Raija Salomaa of Quilters’ Treasure Chest became the perfect canvas to bring this design to life.

The Companion Bible Study

The vision behind Bloom Where You Are goes beyond creating a quilt—it’s about building faith through creativity. This inspired the development of the Bloom Where You Are Bible Study, a six-lesson guide designed to complement the quilt pattern.

Each lesson aligns with the quilting process, offering:

- Reflection prompts.

- Scripture readings.

- Prayers to guide your journey.

Just as each piece of fabric contributes to the beauty of a quilt, this study encourages you to embrace your current season and bloom with faith.

Bringing "Bloom Where You Are" to Life

Creating Bloom Where You Are was as rewarding as it was inspiring. Here’s a glimpse into the process:

Fabric Prep

• I selected eight fabrics from the Island Zest collection, focusing on warm, vibrant colors that reflect the quilt’s theme. These fabrics were arranged in an ombré gradient to add depth and flow to the design.

Block Assembly

I used the Eight-at-Once method to create half-square triangles, a quick and efficient approach perfect for this pattern. Each block was trimmed with the Studio 180 Design Tucker Trimmer I to ensure sharp points and clean lines.

Tips:

• Use Sue Daley’s rotating cutting mat for fast, efficient trimming.

• Mark your rulers with Follow Me Quilter’s Arrows for accurate cutting and fewer mistakes.!

Recommended Tools:

• Quilter’s Magic Wand: For precise diagonal marking.

• Tucker Trimmer I: Perfect for precision trimming. (Use Tucker Trimmer III for queen-size quilts.)

• Rotary Cutter with a fresh blade and Cutting Mat: Essential for consistent cuts.

.Final Touches:

The final touch will be adding borders, quilting and binding, which will being everything together beautifully, but I will have to complete that after the blog hop but you can see my finished quilt top below.

I loved making this quilt top and reflecting on the lessons that came from it. It is a reminder that beauty comes every small step we take, from trusting the design and allowing every piece to find its place.
